Project Details
Description
The finalized project 'AGROFORESTRY 2025' resulted in more clarity on the profitability and cost-benefit of a range of agroforestry types. Management of the tree and shrub components have also been optimized. Agroforestry involves combining the cultivation of woody crops (trees or shrubs) with those of agricultural crops and/or livestock to create new products and services. This research project aimed to increase the applicability of agroforestry as a system within the Flemish agricultural sector. The aim was to examine the following at plot and farm level: 1) how agroforestry can simultaneously contribute to climate adaptation and mitigation, 2) which species and variety choices boost the overall performance of the system, 3) how to improve management and 4) how to identify the most feasible development paths both economically and in the institutional landscape.
Research approach
The core method of a co-design approach with a broad group of stakeholders in nine action labs (i.e. thematic working groups) enhanced the farm technical and a socio-economic work packages. These working groups implemented concrete actions towards change. Knowledge dissemination through communication, dissemination and exploitation was intensive, as in previous agroforestry projects.
Relevance/Valorisation
Conclusion: agroforestry in Flanders can master several challenges, given a well-considered approach: we can increase farm profitability and resilience, respond to climate mitigation and adaptation, create opportunities for other actors in the value chain, optimize the use, conservation and protection of biodiversity and natural resources. The project unlocks the potential of the best-rated, most efficient and profitable agroforestry systems in their various forms. There are now documented lists of best practices in terms of management and design, around carbon storage potential, around costs & benefits, around policy priorities and around a successful AF growth path. All project results are made accessible via the website agroforestryvlaanderen.be.
