    Main research question/goal
    ILVO contributes its expertise on sustainable development to this international project with Moroccan and German project partners. The main question is "How can saffron yield and revenues be optimized in every step of the production chain?" This project focuses on sustainable agricultural development in the region of Souss-Massa-Draâ in Southern Morocco. The strategic plan for this region emphasizes valorization of regional products such as saffron. Our goal is to clarify how every step in the production chain (water-and energy consumption, packaging, conservation, commercialization) can be made more sustainable.

    Research approach
    We analyze the social, geographical and institutional context of the region of Souss-Massa-Draâ using participative research methods by conducting interviews with local stakeholders (farmers, traders, processors, government, etc.). We estimate the probability and feasibility of developing a more sustainable production chain. This examination occurs in close cooperation with the local actors, thereby enhancing the chance for success.

    Results of this research are used to further implement the strategic plan for the region. Results will be made publicly available during an international conference, in scientific publications and in a final report.
