Consultancy service for better soil and water quality (B3W)

Project Details

Description

Main research question/goal

In early 2021, the consultancy service for better soil and water quality called B3W (Begeleidingsdienst voor Betere Bodem en Waterkwaliteit) was launched as a new guidance and information service for the Flemish agriculture and horticulture sector. B3W was set up on behalf of the Flemish Land Agency (VLM). Based on in-depth knowledge and practical experience, B3W guides agricultural and horticultural companies in their evolution towards sustainable nutrient management and soil care. The aim is to reduce nutrient losses to water, soil and air as well as to improve soil fertility.

Research approach

B3W is a collaboration between 13 Flemish agricultural research institutes and test centres, with different locations and areas of expertise. The exchange of knowledge between all parties involved is essential. This is done through three activities: (i) thematic exchange moments involving a demonstration on a farm, (ii) focus groups as learning networks in which farms voluntarily participate to apply existing knowledge and develop new knowledge and (iii) individual coaching to improve nutrient management on a specific farm.

Relevance/Valorisation

B3W supports farmers and horticulturists with innovative techniques, based on research and daily practice. Consideration is given to sustainable and integrated nutrient management, soil care, soil quality and climate, as well as practical implementation on farms.
