General introduction

Growers of cucumbers and related varieties are facing a new virus threat in their greenhouses since 2021 - CABYV, the Cucurbit aphid-borne yellows virus. It can lead to production losses. Through a joint approach of science and practice (the Flemish cucumber growers) we aim for a rapid approach and control of the viral disease.  Knowledge building and sharing, guidance, improved methodology are the goals of this operational group.  


Research approach

We are setting up a working group responsible for gathering knowledge and exchanging practical experiences between each link in the chain within the sector. The needs of the sector are discussed there. All stakeholders are represented there: growers, auctions, practice centers, seed houses, a research institution. Through analyses of field samples, through research into the virus vectors and spread, through observations on host crops and plants, we build up knowledge about the CABY virus. We map the incubation period. We create a symptom database that growers can call upon. We compare different control strategies in practice. We create a control protocol that is adaptable to the farm-specific situation. This gives growers the tools to reduce the risk of infection and spread. We communicate to the entire industry so that all growers are aware of the latest developments within the operational group. 


Relevance/Valorisation

Besides the previous problems with open-air potyviruses, the new losses due to Cucurbit aphid-borne yellows virus are imminent. Through the results obtained in the OG CABYV project, the problem is coming into clearer focus, allowing for a more targeted control approach.
