Bioconversion of animal manure by fly larvae, rich in protein and fat; process optimization and control

    Project Details

    Description

    General introduction
Can we gain new raw materials from using pig manure on-farm, on a large scale? The aim of this project is to optimize and automate the bioconversion process using Black Soldier fly larvae. In Flanders, too much manure is being produced and pig farmers are challenged by persistent low returns. On the other hand, industry’s demand for bio-based resources is increasing. By converting manure into valuable biomass (fly larvae) in a semi-industrial way, the larvae can be used as raw material for industrial processes.

    Research approach
A pilot scale processing unit with a capacity of 1000 tons of manure/year is constructed in collaboration with Ghent University, two SMEs and a pioneer farmer. Such single bioconversion units must support an automated bioconversion process. This study explores the following aspects: substrate conditioning and supply, climate control and monitoring, emission control, and integration of the processing unit with the on-farm techniques. The bioconversion process is optimized and the sustainability of the new raw materials is evaluated as an alternative to traditional choices using Life Cycle Assessment. We explore the conditions for an economically, legally and societally successful bioconversion process.
