Project Details
Description
General introduction

The AGROMIX project promoted the transition to more sustainable agricultural practices by integrating agroecological solutions in mixed farming and agroforestry systems. The project generated new insights into the synergies between ecological and socio-economic benefits of these systems. The results were summarised in a catalogue and supported by practical tools such as the Treefiles App Group, the Resilience Self-Assessment Tool and the Land-Use Change Interactive Map. AGROMIX also reached European policymakers with a specially developed white paper and direct engagement at various project events.

Research approach

Practice-based research: Eight test sites in Europe and 12 participatory groups of farmers and stakeholders participated in a collaborative design process aimed at system change.

Interdisciplinary research: Scientific disciplines, from biophysical to social sciences, were combined to develop solutions for complex land use systems.

Role of ILVO: ILVO coordinated and evaluated the participatory processes, taking into account the unique contextual factors in each pilot area.

Economic and ecological added value: Specific research on the benefits of agroforestry and mixed farming systems

Relevance/Valorisation

AGROMIX made tangible contributions to knowledge on climate mitigation and adaptation strategies in agriculture. The involvement of farmers and stakeholders in participatory research strengthened support for change and enabled the development of practice-based solutions. The tools and white paper provide policymakers and agricultural professionals with concrete tools to implement sustainable and resilient farming systems. The project thus promotes the integration of agroforestry and mixed farming practices into European policy strategies and land management.
