Evaluation of new technologies to improve economic and ecological performance of animal production farms

    Project Details

    Description

    General introduction
The objective of the Pigs2win project is to build a calculation tool for the pig sector in Flanders. The tool allows for identifying and explaining the gross margin and underlying key performance indicators of farrow-to-finish farms. Key performance indicators of different farms can be compared and the economic effect of improved technical key performance indicators and prices can be simulated. The aim is to provide a decision support system that can be used by individual farmers to evaluate performances and to identify appropriate improvement paths.

    Research approach
A participatory approach is used for the development and implementation of the Pigs2win tool. This means that multiple stakeholders (e.g. advisors, policy makers, farmers) are actively involved during the development process. This allows for a permanent evaluation of the tool and ensures its use in practice. The end-version of the Pigs2win tool is made available via a website.

    Relevance/Valorisation
The competitiveness of the pig sector in Flanders is under pressure. The Pigs2win tool can be considered as a practical instrument to improve competitiveness.  The tool and manual are made available via the website. After registration, users can then download the tool.
