Family farm takes step toward sow husbandry of the future

Project Details

Description

General introduction

As a research organisation, ILVO is involved in several projects that have been approved within the Dutch subsidy module brongerichte verduurzaming van stal- en managementmaatregelen, in short SBV-innovatie. ILVO's main task within these projects is to perform emission measurements on the farms where the innovative barn and management measures are applied.

Research approach

The innovative system involves a free-range farrowing sow house equipped with the DUOSEP (V) system developed by Jovas Agro International BV and HV Advies. DUOSEP is a system based on frequent manure removal aimed at separating the manure and watery fraction from the barn as quickly as possible. Under the combined slatted floors in each free-range barn pen, the separated flows are collected in different collection compartments.

The purpose of ILVO's emission measurements is to determine the ammonia, methane, odor and particulate matter emissions of the DUOSEP barn concept at this free-range farrowing sow barn.

The aim of ILVO's emission measurements is to determine the ammonia, methane, odour and fine dust emissions of the DUOSEP shed concept at this free-range farrowing sow shed.

Relevance/Valorisation

If signficantly lower emissions are determined compared to the traditional system, the measurement results can be used within an application for legal recognition as a low-emission system.
