Farmer-researcher collaboration for hazelnut cultivation and processing in Flanders (HazelSamen)

General introduction

In 2025, the hazelnut cultivation and processing chain in Flanders is too immature for balanced cooperation between the chain links, but there are opportunities for a more stable future. This is evident from the EIP preparation process HazelSamen. In this project, farmers explored the cultivation and processing of hazelnuts in Flanders together with experts from ILVO, Boerenbond, and Flanders' Food. The project revealed what growers want in terms of cooperation. Almost all growers are in the start-up phase and do not yet have sufficient production to meet the growing demand for hazelnuts, including from the chocolate industry. 

Research approach

We investigated together with the participating farmers which cooperation model would be most suitable and which common goal should be pursued. New farmers with an interest in the project also joined the group, including a tour of Agronuts, a machine demonstration, and an inspirational session on hazelnuts with around 30 participants spread accross the supply chain.

Relevance/Valorisation

Hazel trees are a native tree species. However, in 2025, hazelnut cultivation in Flanders covers barely 18 hectares. There is some movement in this niche sector: some growers are gradually becoming too big for local sales. However, their production is still too small to ensure a continuous supply to larger customers. Some also indicated that cooperation on processing machinery would be useful, but that they would prefer to keep sales in their own hands.
