General introduction

To what extent do offshore wind farms (OWFs) offer an opportunity to improve returns as marine space in synergy with other objectives? That is the research question in the MSP4MORE project.  These nature-inclusive designs and multifunctional uses are being examined: nature conservation, food supply via aquaculture. The project aims to develop tools to reduce the tension between renewable energy production, nature, and food supply. For the sustainable expansion of offshore wind farms within marine spatial planning (MSP), combination scenarios are being investigated for wind farms with other desired sustainable livelihoods, nature conservation and restoration, and the protection of cultural heritage. 


Research approach

Methods are being developed and applied to map and monitor socio-cultural contexts. In addition, tools are being developed to assess cumulative effects in different environments, so that marine spatial planning can be optimized at the local to regional level for the sustainable integration of offshore wind farms.


Relevance/Valorisation

The rapid rollout of renewable energy is a priority, with offshore wind farms capable of significantly increasing capacity. However, it is essential that this development does not compromise nature conservation and food production. The proposed tool offers planners and managers at the regional level concrete support in balancing energy, nature, and livelihoods goals, thereby enabling the responsible expansion of offshore wind.
