Project Details
Description
The E-Cow Sentinel research project aims to develop a warning system that alerts dairy farmers in good time when there is an increased risk of heat stress for their cows. The goal is to systematically map the impact of summer weather changes on the health, stress (well-being), and diseases of animals in the pasture and in the barn in four areas along the Belgian border. By linking the data, the researchers want to better understand when heat stress and climate-sensitive conditions occur. E-Cow Sentinel can then develop a practical, integrated warning system. The focus is on both animal welfare (and its preservation) and business continuity and the climate resilience of dairy farms in a changing climate.
Research approach
The project is setting up a cross-border network of 100 farms, including 20 sentinel farms that will be monitored more intensively. Existing management systems on the farms will be linked to meteorological data, bringing together zootechnical, health, and weather data in a single system. E-Cow Sentinel combines field monitoring, sensor technology, and advanced data analysis to develop indicators for heat stress and disease. Sentinel farms serve as reference points, while data from ground stations and satellites provide additional insight into local weather and environmental conditions. Veterinary expertise is linked to AI-driven prediction models, and livestock farmers and advisors are actively involved in testing and improving the warning system.
Relevance/Valorisation
The E-Cow Sentinel warning tool is expected to enable dairy farmers to make better decisions and respond more proactively to climate risks. The project promotes sustainable land use, responsible use of medication, and resilient herds. Plans have been made to make the results available via digital platforms, with cross-border applicability. Innovative technologies and networks are creating a model for future climate adaptation in the dairy sector.
