How can we build trust and momentum for carbon farming practices across the European Union? The CREDIBLE project, an EU Soil Mission project, aims to establish a Network of Networks (NoN) that promotes transparency, environmental responsibility, and standardized methods for soil carbon accounting. Focusing on three main themes— which practices, what standard, how to monitor —CREDIBLE coordinates 11 technical Focus Groups (FGs) to tackle current challenges in carbon farming. These FGs serve as a collaborative hub for researchers, government agencies, and existing agricultural networks. To foster open dialogue and engage a wide range of stakeholders, the project will also host three annual European Carbon Farming Summits.
Robust Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) is essential to ensure that carbon removals have environmental integrity and are real, additional, measurable, permanent, and that they avoid carbon leakage and double counting. Within the NoN established by the CREDBILE project, ILVO is leading one of these 11 FGs on Using data from long-term monitoring sites in the context of carbon farming. Our role is to facilitate conversations between data providers, coordinators from existing networks of long-term monitoring sites (LTMs), and data users, including researchers and MRV developers. The goal is to create guidelines and recommendations for setting up and managing LTMs, ensuring the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability (FAIR) of soil carbon data and connected experimental data for MRV systems.
The CREDIBLE project plays a pivotal role in shaping EU policy discussions on Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming (CRCF). ILVO is actively involved in MARVIC, where we develop a harmonized and context-specific MRV framework, and in the EJP Soil Program, conducting research on long-term experiments across Europe. This expertise allows us to contribute significantly to the conversations within CREDIBLE and fosters opportunities for future collaborations.
