The ALADIN research project is working on the substance lutein, which can be extracted from microalgae. The aim is to help make the substance available as a nutritional component and to inform doctors about the results of the health effects, as studied in this project. There are already strong indications that microalgae lutein, when included in the daily diet, has the potential to promote alertness and cognitive functions. Lutein has antioxidant and light-filtering effects, but also has a positive effect on eye and visual performance. It can cross the blood-brain barrier (protective layer around the brain), which explains the link with eye and brain health.
Research approach
The project tests the cognitive performance of two target groups: elderly people and postmenopausal women with obesity. A dose-response design (placebo, 6 mg, 14 mg lutein) is used, with a follow-up period of up to 12 months. In parallel, the partners are demonstrating the industrial feasibility of producing lutein-rich microalgae, with a view to large-scale application similar to baker's yeast. The combination of clinical evaluation and production upscaling should demonstrate both effect and availability.
Relevance/Valorisation
From a societal perspective, the partners will provide results from large groups clinical studies, which will be necessary to confirm the effect of lutein-rich microalgae on cognitive health to give novel approaches for the prevention of cognitive decline and dementia. In time, the general public and corporate interest in microalgae as a lutein dietary vector to enhance brain health will be risen. From an academic perspective, the generated nutritional and clinical data will help to elucidate the role of lutein-rich microalgae in altering metabolism and cognitive function.
