Farming the future- Building rural networks for climate-adaptive agriculture

Project Details

Description

General introduction

There is now an online course for agroforestry candidates, with lessons on technical knowledge, design choices, revenue models and possible business plans. This is one of the results of the participatory research project FARMLIFE. Based on an intensively supervised trajectory on three pilot farms in North Brabant (the Netherlands), agroforestry systems were tested, implemented, demonstrated and documented online. The aim of agroforestry is to create greater ecological and economic resilience to climate change on farms. Through agroforestry, production diversifies, the carbon footprint decreases and the management efforts and costs for climate adaptation remain limited.

Research approach

FARMLIFE has brought together instruments and knowledge and presents them in a user-friendly manner. Eighteen masterclasses and a 12-module course have been developed to explain the business model, depending on the farm's context and preferences. On the three pilot farms, the research partners developed customized business plans for the implementation of agroforestry. An online knowledge platform has been set up where, in addition to the masterclasses and the online course, a label for agroforestry farms has also been introduced.

Relevance/Valorisation

In times of climate change, the project contributes to the smoother implementation of viable, resilient agricultural models. The project provides tools and knowledge that support the transition to agroforestry, which is crucial for those who want to explore sustainable agricultural systems.
