The aim of this project was to present available geographic information (economic data, Natura 2000, windfarm areas) in multiple layers in a user-friendly online system of interactive maps. In this way, policymakers, the producer organization (Rederscentrale), and also the professional fishers can make the necessary decisions for their activities in a more flexible way and with sound background information.
In the first part of the project, the information platform was developed and some layers of information were added. These include data layers like fishing effort (in fishing hours) and effort data per species. Furthermore, selection layers are included such as fisheries restrictions in marine protected areas, windfarm areas, etc. In the second part of the project, a test version was discussed with the stakeholders. Based on this participation process, the tool was developed further and fine-tuned.
The GEOFISH tool offers a solution through interactive visualization: the user selects the data of interest and the tool projects the requested data on geographical maps. This concerns aspects in function of economy (supply, effort), spatial constraints (Natura 2000 and wind farms) and maritime borders (e.g. ICES areas, 12 mile zones). This facilitates the interpretation of the data and immediately shows variations between areas and between years or quarters. Fishers are also aware of possible restrictions on fishing grounds now and in the future. The policy can in turn make use of Geofish during negotiations on spatial use and possible compensations. Finally, the tool can also be used for communication to the general public (e.g. communication event VLAM for fish of the year), such as for example over the annual evaluation of the status of fish stocks.
