Development of screening approaches for frost and disease resistance in lavender

Project Details

Description

General introduction

The breeding research on frost-tolerant lavender in this project makes it likely that new lavender varieties that are better adapted to our winter temperatures will come on the market in the foreseeable future after the project ends. In Flanders, lavender (Lavandula spp.) is one of the most widely sold drought-tolerant garden and patio plants.  Especially the Mediterranean lavender varieties with their particularly attractive flowers (e.g., the butterfly lavender) have become extremely popular. Unfortunately, these beautiful lavenders freeze to death in winter and are thus only suitable as pot plants. Also disease resistance (Phytophthora spp) is often still a problem with these plants. At the request of BEST-select, a cooperative association of 17 Flemish ornamental tree nurseries, this project has laid the basis for new improved products, with higher disease and frost tolerance as well as more attractive flower types. The knowledge gained about both processes is being fully and successfully implemented within the breeding program.

Research approach

Scientific information on frost and disease resistance in lavender was not available until this project, but this knowledge is a prerequisite for broadening the lavender assortment in temperate regions. Specifically, bioassays for frost and disease resistance were developed in this project. The researchers also studied various parameters that contribute to these resistances in order to support breeding and select improved genotypes.

Relevance/Valorisation

The added value is clear: New lavender cultivars that combine already existing drought resistance with improved frost and disease resistance open up numerous new opportunities in the garden plant market. The combination of these traits with a variety of special flower types, in all likelihood expands the range of lavender as a perennial evergreen garden plant. The market share for BEST-select members will benefit.
