Main research question/goal

The objective of this RISE proposal is to form an international and inter-sectoral network working in the development of novel technological approaches for a low-cost and reliable characterization of CROP Yield QUALity Traits of target crops grown under Changing Environmental Conditions (CEC). The aim of CropYQualT-CEC action is to progress towards key advances in current breeding programs with improved methodologies (traits and protocols) for phenotyping. The project will enable the development of models based on data coming from high throughput phenotyping tools and laboratory analyses aiming to predict crop yield and quality traits.


Research approach

In this project we will use (close) remote sensing techniques for crop monitoring and high throughput phenotyping under field conditions for wheat, soybean, quinoa, rice and maize. Resilient cultivars and molecular markers linked with better yield and nutritional quality traits within a climate change context (water stress, elevated temperature and [CO2]) will be identified. Besides UAV based phenotyping in the field, the use of multispectral and NIRs technologies for quality assessment will be evaluated. Finally we will focus on development of crop grain yield and quality predictive models. All research findings will be disseminated to companies and farmers.


Relevance/Valorisation

Within this project we will focus on awareness of the issues of changing environmental conditions into agricultural systems, training in regulation/policy issues and how to implement new tools at farmer level. The researchers in the RISE secondments are expected to engage in outreach activities. Outreach implies an interaction between the sender and the receiver of the message, there is an engagement and a two-way communication between the researcher and the public. Therefor we aim to: (i) to promote the project and their results internationally, (ii) to ensure the diffusion and divulgation of the conducted activities in CropYQualT-CEC action, (iii)  to train the staff working in agriculture systems to understand the global EU regulation and the running efforts on policy development about changing environmental conditions, and (iv) to increase the overall competency in Europe to deal with climate change from the point of view of food through training, implementation and pre-validation of assays with potential to ensure highly productive and resource efficient agricultural systems.
