Precision feeding of growing-finishing pigs: multi phase feeding based on European protein sources

    Main research question/goal
    The protein supplied by the pig feed is mainly intended for meat formation. The part that is present in excess or in an inappropriate composition is used as an energy source. Excess nitrogen is excreted in the urine and ends up in the environment. It thus is essential to  adapt the supply to the pigs’ requirement. In this way, one can reduce both the environmental load and (soy-based) protein imports. The aim of this project is to show that strategic feeding can result in environmental gains without economic disadvantages. We also demonstrate that pigs grow equally good with less (imported) soy products in their diet.

    Research approach
    The researchers formulate diets that meet the needs of the animals with as little protein as possible. European raw materials are used to the extent possible. These feeds are used in performance trials. Nitrogen digestibility and nitrogen emissions are studied in digestibility trials. In the next phase the feeding strategies are demonstrated on commercial farms. The four academic partners (ILVO Animal Sciences unit, Katholieke Hogeschool Kempen, Hogeschool Gent  and project coordinator Proef- en Vormingscentrum Bocholt) work together closely.

    Given the nitrogen problem and the problem of imported (soy) protein, this demonstration project has great relevance for Flanders’ pig industry. The project contributes to more sustainable and more socially acceptable pig production in Flanders. The researchers pay particular attention to the dissemination of the results to the target audience, including a brochure and demonstration days.
