Development of ginger cultivation in Flanders

Project Details

Description

General introduction

Growing ginger in Flanders is possible, but requires more knowledge development. The goal of this project is to facilitate a true local value chain around Flemish-produced ginger. To this end, work is being done on the availability of disease-free planting material, on the development of low-input or year-round cultivation in Flemish conditions, on the quality, consumer appreciation and storage of young ginger, and on useful insights into selling price and profitability.

Research approach

ILVO's work package is limited to the study and development of in vitro propagation techniques that can lead to good results, and to the screening of starting material for viruses by high-throughput sequencing (HTS). The practical research centers PCG and VCBT partner with ILVO and focus on the cultivation technique of Flemish ginger, storage, profitability and roll-out.

Relevance/Valorisation

By competitive pricing, good preservation and a year-round availability locally produced ginger may largely replace import and even be exported. We estimate the potential market at over 2000 tons per year, representing 40 growers with an average cultivation surface of 500 m².
