Goal of this research is to increase our epidemiological knowledge on viroids, extremely small 'virus-like' RNA molecules. The emphasis is to assess the risk of viroid transmission between latently infected horticultural crops and potato/tomato. We will define the role of insects (aphids, bumblebees, myrids, etc) in viroid transmission and spread. From a more general point of view, we aim to increase available knowledge on the interaction between the group of the pospiviroids and their most important host plant group, the Solanaceae.
Interaction between viroids, insects and host plants are studied though controlled greenhouse and climate chamber experiments. This interaction is further studied by means of PCR, (HTS) sequencing and (electron) microscopy techniques. Attention is also given to the development of fast, accurate and sensitive diagnostic tools.
Better knowledge about the transmission risks allows to communicate accurately to the competent services to (i) draft and/or complete pest risk assessments and (ii) assess the regulated status (Q-status) of some of the viroids. This knowledge also benefits the producers of solanaceous crops (ornamentals, potato, tomato, etc.),a s it will allow them to better manage potential viroid outbreaks in their facilities (control measures, insect control, trade and crop choice).
