    Abstract

Farmers can be motivated in different ways to participate in initiatives aiming stimulate farmers towards sustainable farming. The dynamic interaction between an initiative’s design, farmer motivations to participate and their motivations to contribute to sustainable farming, makes research on farmer motivations to participate in sustainable farming initiatives (SFI) very interesting for SFI organizers. To grasp this dynamic relation between motivations and an initiative’s design, 9 hypotheses were developed, using Self-determination theory (SDT). Based on these hypotheses we constructed a methodology to test them in SFI cases.
