Report of the Eucarpia Multisite Rust Evaluation Working Group

Abstract

From 2001 to 2013, five EUCARPIA multisite rust evaluation trials were
conducted at 21 to 32 sites in 10 to 12 European countries. The aim of the
trials was to assess the rust resistance of 16 Italian (Lolium multiflorum), 4
Hybrid (L. boucheanum) and 34 perennial ryegrass (L. perenne) cultivars.
During the meeting of the section “Forage Crops and Turfgrasses” of
Eucarpia at Ghent in 2015, a workshop was organized to discuss the future
of the trial. The starting position of the discussion was the fact, that the
seed stock is almost used up and the germination rate of some varieties is
now very poor. The group decided to start a new trial, which focuses on
leaf spot and rust diseases of Lolium species.
