    Abstract

The physical properties of growing media become more and more important for optimal plant growth. As they can not be changed during the growing period, these properties should be optimal from the beginning. In contrast, the chemical properties can be adapted to optimal conditions during the growth period. The particle size is an important factor in determining the water- and air relationship. From several primary materials we will show the influence of the different particle sizes not only for each material separately but also for mixed materials. We also like to introduce quality classes based on the physical properties and how we can reach them through the variation of the particle size.
