Abstract
which will have a negative effect on the performance of forage grasses.
Existing varieties should be evaluated for drought tolerance and new, more
drought tolerant varieties should be developed. Drought stress tolerance is currently assessed using visual scores, but new techniques and technologies such as imagery from airborne vehicles have the potential to make such assessments more automatic and objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate UAV-based remote sensing, using an unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV or
drone) equipped with a visual and thermal camera as an alternative for scoring
forage grasses for drought tolerance. A very good correlation (0.866) was
found between the imagery-based indices and the visual scores assigned to
individual plants by the breeder. This opens perspectives for using UAV-based
remote sensing for breeding for drought tolerance in forage grasses.
