The phytosanitary risk in the potato chain: the case of potato cyst nematodes in Belgium

Activiteit: Gesprek of presentatieLezing en mondelinge bijdrage

    Beschrijving

The possibility for spread and contamination with Globodera spp. in all steps involved in producing and processing potato where studied for the Belgian potato industry. Starting with seed potato tubers planted in the field up to the waste water after washing French fries, all sources of contamination were quantified though sampling or data obtained from literature and interviews. A cost /benefit analysis of possible measures was performed for every point in the chain with a risk for introducing or spreading cysts.
This showed that, for Belgium, treatment or reducing spread of contaminated tare soil (soil attached to tubers) is a priority.
