Helleborus spp. are winter and early spring flowering perennials belonging to the family of the Ranunculaceae. All species have a diploid chromosome level (2n = 32). Polyploidisation commonly results in an increase in flower size and more vigorous growth. Three antimitotic agents, colchicine, oryzalin and trifluralin, were compared for their efficiency in inducing chromosome-doubling of in vitro Helleborus species. The effect of polyploidisation was genotype dependent. Survival rate and regrowth of shoots were determined. Differences were observed for the Helleborus species.
