    Rhododendron simsii hybrid or pot azalea is the most important flowering pot plant in Belgium, with an annual production of approximately 35 million plants. Problems caused by broad mites (Polyphagotarsonemus latus) have become increasingly important in recent years, spiking research on the control of broad mites in azalea. One potential strategy consists of developing resistant or tolerant cultivars.
    To detect possible resistance or tolerance towards broad mites in Rhododendron spp., we conducted a screening of 30 Rhododendron spp. mainly belonging to the Tsutsusi subgenus. Plants were selected based on phenotypic characteristics like hairiness of leaves and stems, and leaf texture.
