Different primary energy saving techniques for greenhouses have been tested in the past. Systems were designed for optimal growing conditions with a lower energy demand by using the first law. However, no attention was paid to the exergy destruction in the processes. The exergy destruction is related to the driving potential of the processes and the mass/energy transfer quantity, and it determines the efficiency of the system. In this paper, different energy saving techniques are studied based on exergy analyses at the process level. Many of the studied techniques could be labeled as “less promising”. Based on the assessment, our research team selected a set of optimal techniques and developed the EXE-kas (= EXery Efficient greenhouse). The EXE-kas consists of an efficient dehumidification device (vapour heat pump) and EB (Energy Balancing)-screens. The vapour heat pump has a dehumidification efficiency of around 7. The EB-screens keep the energy balance of the greenhouse.
